We drew a frame "watercolor/face/figure." Both Mom and I enjoy water color painting. Back in the mid 1990's when Spouse and I lived in Central Oregon, Mom came to visit and we went to a week-long watercolor portrait workshop with Jan Kunz. It was revolutionary and something both of us have played with many times in the years since. BUT... both of us have been away from it for a long time in recent times so when we picked this frame, we both wanted to dabble back with Jan Kunz' method of adding color to the face. I went to Kunz' book: Painting Watercolor Portraits That Glow. (published by Northlight) I used one of her drawings and step-by-step tutorial to get myself refreshed. Lesson 1: don't let so much time elapse when working on an art skill. Here is my result. Oh, and the watercolor paper had a scratch right down the center so the paint on the first wash made a ragged line down the middle of the little girl's face. Hmmm! Lesson 2: be more careful in selecting paper next time.
Mom chose to work from a photograph a friend gave her years ago. She worked and worked to get the picture done. This is her first try.
She realized the figure was badly out of proportion and so we (Lesson 3: I helped coach her on figure drawing issues) worked on a second drawing and she re-did the painting.
The second one is so wonderful in color and so much better in proportion but, Lesson 4: she realized that this child isn't leaning its face against the woman's thigh like the child in the first painting is and so has entirely different emotional freight. Wow. So many lessons learned in this process!! I am sure there are many more to come.
